This book, authored by Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, is a work of preaching, guidance, belief, and Shari’ah law. Within its chapters, the author explores the purification of the soul and its refinement from an Islamic perspective. The reader journeys through its pages, encountering a blend of counsel and admonition.
The book addresses the ailments of the nafs al-ammārah (the soul that incites to evil), exposing its weaknesses and the overpowering influence of desires. It also warns of the schemes and deceptions of Satan, who leads the soul toward sin and attachment to the fleeting pleasures of worldly life.
Ibn al-Qayyim wrote this book in response to a man who posed the following question:
"What do the scholars say about a man afflicted with a trial, who realizes that if it continues, it will ruin both his worldly life and his Hereafter? He has done everything in his power to remove it, but to no avail. What should he do to be rid of it? May Allah have mercy on the one who helps the afflicted. And indeed, Allah helps the servant so long as the servant helps his brother. Please advise us—may Allah reward you."
The Imam, may Allah have mercy on him, responded with this powerful and insightful book.
